Shelton YMCA

Shelton, Washington (Mason County)

Construction of 23,000 SF YMCA to bring neighborhood health, education, workforce training, and recreation services to a town challenged since the departure of the timber industry.

The Project

Due to limited investment, Shelton faces many challenges at a scale greater than its peer cities: not enough personal development opportunities for students, high rates of preventable chronic disease, and high rates of youth obesity and depression.

This project built and equipped a 23,000 SF YMCA community facility, providing more than 11,800 community members access to an array of high-quality services, particularly those that are needed more by low-income residents, such as:

  • More medical services available through the embedded clinic and partnership with the Mason General Hospital.

  • Over 50 children from local low-income households mentored through an on-site Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

  • Before and after school childcare services available to 109 children annually.

  • Quality academic programs such as Power Scholars Academy providing summer learning to keep at-risk children from losing up to two months of proficiency during the break.

  • Adaptive physical education classes will use the Y’s pool, gym, and other resources for specialized classes.

  • On-site workforce training and placement delivered through partnership with Pacific Mountain Workforce.

Community Impact

  • Create 41 jobs at the Y plus 10 construction jobs.

  • 2,000 individuals receiving health and wellness services.

  • 2,750 individuals accessing educational programs, such as English as a Second Language, Power Scholars Academy, and nutritional and diabetes counseling.

  • 50 teens mentored on-site annually through Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

  • 510 adults receiving on-site workforce training, development, and job placement assistance from Pacific Mountain Workforce.
